Bird flu has reached our shores. When I heard it was a dead parrott I laughed so hard I cried. Perhaps it just stunned?

Ever since I heard that, I wanted to nick it for my blog. I love QI.

So, I am a car owner now and neglected my poor little blog. I've got a Hyundai Getz, so if you see a brand new black one winging around sheffield - it might be me. I bought it in bolton (lancashire, near where my parent live). The guy there was nice enough to let me test drive his wifes card as they didn't have one in stock. So I bought one. I drove it all the way from bolton to sheffield, on the motorway on my own for the first time, about 150 miles. Then I crashed it into my gatepost.

javascript:emoticon(':oop s:')

The shame.

It's not too bad, managed to get the scratches out. But a one day old car, perfect in every way.. I was so cross, I couldn't look at it all day. But I've got over it - its a car after all, not an ornament. EVERYONE I've told has a story of their own about a stupid thing they did when they first started driving. My dad reversed into a lamppost apparently. So, I feel better about it.

So mostly, I've been doing what I do normally, but much quicker. And I can get it up the driveway now. I do worry about running over my cat - she loves to run out in front of it. I grabbed her and slung her in the car the other day, as she was making me nervous. Cats are funny when you let the loose in the car. She explored every inch and sat with her paws on the dashboard as I drove it up the driveway.

By the way - go to google and type in failure - then click on "I'm feeling lucky".

New Keyboard
09.07.05 (7:40 am)   [edit]
After an "incident" with my previous keyboard, I'm back and typing again. It's funny how much you can do with a mouse, but sending e-mails and updating your blog is not one of them. Well, lots of things have happened while I've been away including a hurricane. I was just thinking at the time that it's lucky we've got all this technology, so it can't be as bad as, say, a tsunami. This storms been predicted for a while, according to men in oversize glasses and sensible cardigans, ie scientists. I saw all this on the bbc - days before it happened. I wish it could have gone differently, and I'm sure everyone involves wishes it had gone differently. The next time I see televised buck-passing, I'm turning the tv off. Politicians, hey - the same the world over.

I don't like cricket much, no. I love it.
08.27.05 (5:15 am)   [edit]
This week I have been mostly watching cricket. Had a great time at old trafford, although I should remember that scots need sunblock. I'm went bright red and I'm still peeling.

At work I've been refreshing the bbc cricket scorecard to keep up to date.

''

I know it's more than a little sad, but there it is.

The only other thing I've done is buy a car, which hasn't arrived yet, so I'm still experiencing the lows and lowers of public transport. Which meant standing outside a busy pub for over an hour last Friday evening. What joy.

Oh, I've been watching carnivale, which is fantastic, if more than a little strange. I hear they haven't made any more, which sucks, but the last series of 6 feet under is on e4 soon so that'll be cool (I've seen some of them and they're as good as the rest)..

Better get back to getting insurance quotes.

Motorway driving
08.08.05 (12:07 am)   [edit]
Well, I'm back after spending all day hurtling round the country and speeds of up to 85 miles an hour (it's only a small car - does everyone think "the engines canna take it" when the car their driving starts doing that shuddering thing which means it's getting close to its top speed - just asking). At first it was a bit overwhelming and I can understand when people say they don't really drive motorways, it's full of nutters whi delight in cutting you up and veering in and out of lanes. But, it gets you places, so thats good, and sometimes you get a stretch of road to yourself, which is nice. Sometimes.

Looking forward to going to the test match on thursday - if you're watching it on the telly, look out for me. I'll be the one drinking beer. The last on was so close - 2 runs, I couldn't watch in the end. In case anyones been dead for the last few days - http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/...

You seem to be straight forward, but you keep a lot inside.

You're laid back and chill, but sometimes you care too much about what others think.

You tend to have one best friend you hang with, as opposed to many aquaintences.

You tend to always dream of things within reach - and you usually get them.

Driving Test
07.28.05 (3:03 am)   [edit]

Stuggling with this new format.. Well for a second time, here it goes..

Passed my driving test this morning, out in the wind and rain, car steaming up, rain driving off the bonnet in rush hour. Feel a bit smug, with a headache. I wonder if examiners are like that at home..? He did say at the beggining to always follow the road ahead unless he said otherwise, but I forgot when I reached a crossroads and stopped and looked at him. "Ahead" he said. Ooops said I. I was pulling into a dual carriage way.. and said "I guess this is left then.." No-where else to go. But it's not straight ahead so really he should have said..

7 minor faults. 2 of which were for speeding.

I my defence - I was driving in Hillsborough (which is the nearest test centre) and if you know the area (arround leppings lane and the football ground - I suspect everyones heard of Hillsborough Stadium) and EVERYONE was speeding - I was just keeping up with the traffic. Ah well, at least he didn't fail me for it. I'm looking forward to doing pass plus in a couple of weeks, we get to drive to the seaside and eat chips. It was the chips that sold it - trust me. Oh, and I've never driven on a motorway before (mostly because its been ILLEGAL - until today!!) and don't fancy doing that on my own..

Hot in the city
07.21.05 (4:19 am)   [edit]
I watched Pink Floyds Live 8 performance the other day. Fantastic. I didn't get to see it on the night as was in the middle of a pub crawl with a bunch of 21 year olds.. Making me feel old.':?'

My friend Abi's sister was the reason we were out, Abi wanted some more "mature" guests with her, to balance things out. Those kids can drink. I'm sure I never drank that much. Mind you, I didn't feel to bad the next day, so I can't have drunk that much.

''

Wait til I'm 30 next year.. we'll show those young whippersnappers a thing or two.. or maybe an early night - haven't yet decided.

Went to see some bands last night. Some of them looked so young - when I was 17 I couldn't have afforded all that fancy gear, but they did sound good. The main band I went to see were one man and his blunderbuss. They were excellent, extreme metal with humor and subtelty and pasties. Visit the site if you must, but there is much foulness and irony here, so, you know, don't complain to me if it offends you. - www.onemanandhisblunderbuss

So.. nearing my driving test. If I think about it I'll vomit (god - why do I get so nervous?) so I'll leave that subject well alone.

My job for the day is to get someone to clean our windows. I'm doing well at this as you can tell - I can avoid a task all day if needs be. Later, I'll probably end up cleaning the kitchen floor to avoid it.

Or watching the test match. Which is all going well right well, and as I don't have any wood at hand to touch, I'll leave that subject alone..

Yes I do like cricket. Beer and sunshine. What can I possibly see in it...

Wednesday
07.13.05 (11:20 am)   [edit]
Whats the point of wednesday? One day we'll cut them out and go straight to Thursday. Much more civilised.

I couldn't think of much to write here recently..

..I happened to be off work last thursday when the london bombs went off. BBC had continuous footage of grumpy comuters moaning, then later queuing.. then stomping off muttering. Gawd bless em.

Don't look to me for insight. I have no idea why someone would carry a bomb anywhere. See.. thats why I couldn't think of anything to say.

Ah well, in the words of god (according to douglas adams) "we are sorry for the inconvenience.."

hot!
06.27.05 (4:17 am)   [edit]
'8)'

Phew. I'm not used to this. You know it's too hot when you long to be at work to take advantage of the air conditioning! I have had a day off and have treated myself to a new hair cut and bunches of new summery clothes.. Most of my warbrobe consists of baggy trousers and metal teeshirts which I have had for years. I decided it was time to get some clothing which doesn't make me feel like a teenager before I turn 30 (only months away.. well 9 months away). I do still listen to metal though - in case I haven't mentioned it before, I used to be in a death metal band - I played bass. I still have it next door, but I don't play it much anymore - mostly because I'm too busy doing this open university course, or working or just lazing around because it's too bloody hot. I really enjoyed being in a band, especially the novelty of being the only girl most of the time. Plus, I had decent gear (5 string yamaha bass, trace elliot 14 band eq head..) and had the advantage of not being too bad a player.. I clearly remember coming off stage after a hard evenings headbanging and jumping up and down one night and a couple of guys from another band came over and said "nice picking technique". eh? um, thanks.. did you like the music? I guess they weren't listening to it, they were just checking out whether or not I could play. typical of metal bands.

Here is my top 5 essential metal albums in no particlar order..
At the Gates - Slaughter of the Soul - absolute classic.
7th son of a 7th Son - Iron Maiden - nuff said
Symphony of destruction - Megadeth - every song on here is fantasic.
Angeldust - Faith no more - started a fascination with mike patton and Mr Bungle, fantomas etc..
System of a down - Toxicity - Not so keen on the new album, but this was just so different I loved it straight away.

I could probably go on. I also like progier metal - messuggah (or something, I can never remember how many s's and g's) cryptopsy (fantasic live), opeth, dream theatre (seen live 3 times)

Oh I just realised I missed carcass - heartwork off the above list. Well, my 6 greatest metal albums.

On a totally unrelated note, Dr Who has finished

That was fantasic (as the man himself said). This saturday was rubbish with no Dr Who episode. I wasn't sure about Billie Piper as Rose (captured most weeks, as any good assistant should be), she was brill. Also, John Barrowman as captain jack.. brilliant. He must be in the next series - YOU LISTENING DAVIS!! KEEP IN CAPTAIN JACK!!

[image]evillin_483580143.jpg[/image]

I've loved it, I'm no big Dr Who fan, although I do admit I have friends who are massive Dr Who fans. So I have been watching old eposides and generally swamped with information about it.. Chris Eccleston (who I really only knew as the bad guy in "the fast and the furious" and the cat guy from "the league of gentleman") has been excellent.

I especially liked the world war 2 episodes, and I guess they were both the scariest.. plus, captain jack was in them. Oh, but the ann robinson droid killing daleks was cools as well. Roll on the christmas special!

We should wear more hats.
06.15.05 (9:15 am)   [edit]
Everytime I try and post on this blasted thing it's down. I had a brilliant and witty idea I had to share with the world. Then I forgot it. This happens to me at least 8 times every day. honest.

So - I have actually been out the house. I finished my last assignment for my course on 2nd June and decided me and this computer need a break. I spend all day at work on a computer or arguing with some awkward customer (about their computer). Really what I need is a holiday.. hmm..

Anyway.. New course starts soon, so better get myself back in the saddle etc. Everytime I start a new one I'm determined to keep up to date with - not leave things to the last minute - all that bollocks. I never do. Ever. I'm making myself those promises now.. might work this time.. well.. it might.

So, I've actually been watching some films..

Team America - Fuck Yeah! Laughed so hard, I nearly had a cardiac arrest. Kim Jong Lee - Herro! Brilliant. Although, it is based around the same joke, which gets a bit wearing after a while.

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy - listened the the radio show, read the books, watched the TV series.. There's not many jokes here I don't already know, but the casting was FANTASTIC and it made me chuckle - I'm british - I know how to queue.. marvellous. Did you notice in the queue - marvin the paranoid andoid from the TV series. I know it's sad, but I was jumping up and down in my seat.

Finaly of Dr Who on Saturday - was that 13 episodes? It doesn't feel like 13 episodes. Have a look at www.badwolf.org.uk - what is bad wolf? Dr Who in the big brother house (ok - that was cool - admit that was cool). How many Daleks? Is Davros back? all this and more will be revealed.

Oh, I have tickets for zappa plays zappa in manchester - who hoo!! also going to see fantomas tomorrow night.. Oh crap.. cats destroying the house.. better go stop her.

May the force be with you.
05.26.05 (8:23 am)   [edit]
Guess what I've been to see. Fantastic and, for once, not disapointing. I won't spoil it ending for anyone who's be dead for the last 30 years

Anakin turns to the Dark side..

Ooops - there I went and ruined it. I noticed mr mcgregor's accent slide all over the place, "ye wur supposed to be the chosin won". Mind you - what accent is he supposed to have? I never met anyone with a "british" accent - same way as there's no such thing as an american accent. It's a ludicus accent and all the fault of Alex Guinness. He should have made him from wales, or birmingham or somewhere with a silly accent (or yorkshire  - ey up luke. Feel t'force.. be reet). That would have been cool.

So, back in a galaxy nearby, I sat my driving theory test and passed - 35 out of 35. Get in. Have it. Ect. Now I have the dubious honour of being able to sit my practical test. Well - this terrifies me more than life itself, but I will hold a licence by the time I'm 30. There's only 11 months to go, but I WILL DO IT. I hate driving - hurtling round at speed in a great metal contraption. But - think of the freedom. I could literally go to such places and Manchester or Leeds whenever I want..! I hate manchester and leeds. I suppose it's only 3 hours to the border, so I could pop to scotland (or wales). I'm just looking forward to not having to drag the shopping home in installments - that'll be fantastic. And being able to go to the cinema whenever I want, and not having to book taxi's. Imagine such a thing - life would be bliss.

Apparently.

I don't subscibe to that school of though necessarily, but I thought it made a good title.

Don't believe everything you hear in a smiths album. And yet I don't eat meat (and haven't done for years). Why not? Well for a start, I don't like it very much, but I haven't yet figured out if that's because I don't like the idea if meat and can't stomache it or if I just don't like it. I couldn't eat it as a kid, I hated it and would spit it into the toilet - sorry mum

I really can't stand the idea of breeding and ritually killing thousands of animals and not even eating all of. I'm not a militant vegetarian, I don't mind the idea of eating an animal - I just think it would be better if the animal had a decent life - the meat would be better definitely. I don't mind buying it for my bf, especially from the farmers market, but the supermarket shit - nah.

Who Should You Vote For?

Who should I vote for?

Labour -6
Conservative -52
Liberal Democrat 72
UK Independence Party 2
Green 38

You should vote: Liberal Democrat

The LibDems take a strong stand against tax cuts and a strong one in favour of public services: they would make long-term residential care for the elderly free across the UK, and scrap university tuition fees. They are in favour of a ban on smoking in public places, but would relax laws on cannabis. They propose to change vehicle taxation to be based on usage rather than ownership.
